Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening

Even if your teeth are perfectly healthy (thanks to your diligent brushing and flossing, of course), you might not be perfectly happy with your smile because it’s not as bright and white as you’d like it to be. Teeth whitening is a popular and simple treatment our Pasadena, TX, and Pearland, TX offices use to change the brightness of your teeth and improve your smile.

Why do teeth get stained?

Several factors can cause teeth to get stained:

  • Food and drink – Coffee, tea, and red wine are big factors in staining teeth
  • Tobacco use – Tobacco contains two chemicals in particular that create stubborn stains: tar and nicotine.
  • Age – Over time, the enamel on your teeth (which is the hard, white outer layer) gets thinner, and the yellowish layer below (called dentin) starts to show through.
  • Trauma – Teeth may react to an injury by laying down more dentin, which may become more visible beneath the layer of enamel.
  • Medications – Certain medications can have tooth staining as a side effect.

Types of Teeth Whitening

  • In-office bleaching

: Also called chairside bleaching, this procedure usually only requires one office visit during which bleach is applied to your teeth. Your gums are protected by either a protective gel or a rubber shield.

  • At-home bleaching:

This method uses peroxide to bleach the tooth enamel. It typically comes in the form of a gel which is placed into a tray that fits onto your teeth. A whitening strip that sticks to your teeth also works the same way. The concentration of the bleaching agent of an over-the-counter bleaching kit is lower than what your dentist would use. You can have special custom trays made at the dentist office.

Because tooth whitening is only effective on natural tooth enamel, it may be necessary to evaluate the replacement of fillings, crowns, etc. so that they will match the newly bleached teeth. Teeth whitening is not permanent, so an occasional touch-up may be needed from our Pasadena or Pearland dental office.
