Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a field of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of improperly positioned teeth and jaws.

Risks of Improperly Placed Teeth

Teeth that are crooked or do not fit together correctly are harder to keep clean and therefore are at a higher risk of developing decay or periodontal disease and being lost. They can also cause stress on the chewing muscles, leading to conditions such as TMJ syndrome, headaches, or neck, shoulder, and back pain. Receiving orthodontic treatment can result not only in a healthier mouth with a more pleasing appearance, but also in teeth that will last longer.

Orthodontic Treatments

Harmony Dental offers different treatment options to best suit your needs.

  • Traditional (Metal) Braces – Traditional braces consist of individual brackets which are attached to each tooth. The brackets are accompanied by an archwire which constantly asserts gentle pressure on the teeth to shift them into their desired position. Metal braces are strong and tend not to stain teeth.
  • Clear (Ceramic) Braces – Clear braces work the same way as traditional braces, but are made with a clear synthetic material and “tooth-colored” ceramic. The ceramic brackets can be more comfortable than the traditional metal ones but are more susceptible to discoloration by coffee, wine, smoking, and certain foods.
  • Invisalign – Invisalign consists of a set of clear aligners that gradually shift the position of the teeth according to a treatment plan. The aligners are practically invisible and are removable. Invisalign is a more comfortable treatment than traditional braces, but also tends to be more costly, and not all patients are candidates for it.

All treatment options require some type of retainer after treatment is complete to maintain the new position of the teeth.
